Nearly two years after its PlayStation 5 debut, Square Enix’s latest RPG installment has finally arrived on both Xbox Series models—and the results are surprisingly solid.
New gameplay videos shared by YouTube channels The Xbox Tester and Fuzion Xbox Testing offer a quick look at how the Xbox ports of Final Fantasy XVI hold up. According to their analysis, the Xbox Series X version is virtually identical to the PlayStation 5 edition, delivering the same image quality and performance across both available graphics modes. Unfortunately, Square Enix didn’t take the opportunity to upgrade the AMD FSR implementation, which still uses the older version seen in the original PS5 release—though this was expected.
The real surprise is how well the game performs on the more modest Xbox Series S. Despite predictable compromises—such as a lower resolution and a single graphics mode capped at 30 FPS—the performance remains impressively stable. Considering that even the PS5’s performance mode often dips below 60 FPS, it’s clear that Final Fantasy XVI delivers a solid and consistent experience even on the budget console.
As reported yesterday, Square Enix dropped the Xbox Series version without prior notice, and the game is now also available on PC via the Microsoft Store. Later this winter, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is set to arrive on Xbox Series as well—and simultaneously, a version is also planned for the Nintendo Switch 2.
This all indicates that Square Enix is genuinely shifting to a multiplatform strategy, which makes perfect sense given the wider potential audience and sales opportunities across platforms.
