They Created Hitman—But IO Interactive’s Wildest Ambition Isn’t 007, It’s an Online Fantasy RPG

Sure, they made Hitman, but IO Interactive’s CEO says their boldest project yet isn’t a Bond game—it’s a fantasy RPG they’d only take on with total creative freedom. Hakan Abrak, IO Interactive’s chief, confirmed that “Project Fantasy” is shaping up as a fully online, fantasy role-playing experience.

Very few studios have the kind of spotless record IO Interactive has built in recent years. The Danish team—creators of Hitman—put Agent 47 on ice two years ago and pivoted to the world of James Bond, but what many forget is that IOI has a whole new IP in the works: Project Fantasy. Mentioned at Summer Game Fest 2025, this fantasy RPG marks a whole new creative chapter for the studio.

Speaking to GameSpot, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak opened up about the creative journey behind the game. “Passion, and being able to put a bit of ourselves into this, is absolutely vital to us,” Abrak said.

There’s little hard info out there for now, but on IOI’s official website the project is described as “an online fantasy role-playing game”—set in a brand-new world, built from the ground up to expand and evolve over time. “It feels familiar, but at the same time, IOI is setting off on a journey like nothing we’ve tried before,” Abrak added.

No one knows the final title or exactly what to expect, but it’s clear the game is in early development and will only accelerate after 007: First Light is out. Abrak says the only reason they agreed to handle two mammoth projects at once was the guarantee of total creative freedom.

Even with the details still tightly under wraps, Abrak’s candid comments suggest more info is coming soon. With two massive games in the pipeline, IO Interactive is heading into its most ambitious era yet—ready to build a legacy that goes well beyond stealth kills and sharp suits.
