MOVIE NEWS – Hollywood’s leading man—and DCEU’s favorite Superman—Henry Cavill soared to fame as the Man of Steel in 2013, and he kept fans hooked in multiple blockbusters, from Mission: Impossible – Fallout to Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. He won even more hearts as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher, showing off his geek cred and range as an actor.
But behind the scenes, Cavill’s been a lifelong gamer, utterly obsessed with the legendary tabletop miniature game Warhammer 40,000. In December 2022, headlines exploded: Cavill would partner with Amazon Studios to finally bring this beloved universe to both TV and film. But what *is* Warhammer 40k, and why is Cavill so determined to bring it to life?
Originally launched by Games Workshop in 1987, Warhammer 40,000 is the world’s most iconic miniature wargame—a brutal, gothic sci-fi future where civilization is stagnant and beset by daemons, monstrous gods, and alien horrors. Set during the “Dark Millennium,” humanity’s empire is led by the immortal Emperor of Mankind and faces endless conflict against Chaos and xenos invaders. It’s a universe where war is endless, the motto being: “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.”
Players field painstakingly painted armies of aliens, mutants, and armored super-soldiers, clashing across diorama battlefields full of ruins, forests, and gothic scenery. Warhammer 40k’s dystopian setting is notorious for its constant, hopeless struggle and sheer scale of violence—no matter which faction you play, hope is always in short supply.
Tabletop success led to a tidal wave of spin-offs: video games, novels, comics, and now, finally, Hollywood’s calling. In 2022, it was official: Henry Cavill, superfan and star, would headline and executive produce a live-action TV series for Amazon. Posting on Instagram, Cavill said: “For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life.”
Cavill’s Dream Project: Warhammer Comes to the Screen
Cavill isn’t just a figurehead—he’s spent decades deep in the Warhammer lore, assembling armies and immersing himself in the game’s epic scope. In 2022, his long campaign paid off, as Amazon greenlit a new saga with Vertigo Entertainment and Games Workshop’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill joining as executive producers. Smillie, GW’s creative director, called it a dream team: “It’s great news and we’re absolutely thrilled; we’re working with a fantastic triumvirate in Henry, Vertigo, and Amazon. Henry’s well-known love of Warhammer 40,000—and his passion as a world-builder and storyteller—will serve us all well in the coming years. Finally, Warhammer will make it to the screen as the fans have hoped, and as they deserve. Exciting times!”
