Hideo Kojima Says the Thing No One Dares: AI Is a Threat to Real Life—And He Might Be Right

Hideo Kojima has never been shy about technology, but now he’s voicing a unique concern: artificial intelligence could quietly push us into a predetermined lifestyle. Kojima’s take on AI goes deeper than the usual warnings—he sees a risk almost no one talks about, and he just might be right.

Artificial intelligence is racing ahead in every industry, and the ultra-creative world of video games is no exception. Generative AI promises to build entire environments, characters, and worlds—exactly the type of creative freedom that legendary developers like Hideo Kojima, the mind behind Death Stranding 2 and Metal Gear Solid, have always championed.

In a recent interview with Japanese outlet Denfaminicogamer, Kojima opened up about his thoughts on AI and its broader implications. He admits he’s wary of what this technology could do to society: “I’m not against technology, but for example, the AI in my smartphone feeds me all sorts of things. I don’t like that either. My fear is that by being too connected online, we’re unwittingly pushed into a predetermined lifestyle.”

Kojima went even further, arguing that the issue isn’t just being “too connected”—it’s how those connections steer our choices. He still believes AI and the internet are essential, but warns that we can’t let them control us. “I don’t think we should give up the internet now. It’s very convenient. I think we survived COVID-19 thanks to the internet. But it’s dangerous to become too dependent on it,” he told PC Gamer.

Kojima Champions Real, Physical Experiences

“You can go to Hawaii in the metaverse, but it’s nothing like actually going. First you go to the airport, then you board the plane, and when you arrive, there are smells and temperatures you only experience there. These adventures add color to my life, and I don’t want to lose them,” Kojima concluded, reflecting on the importance of real, physical presence as the world becomes increasingly digital through AI and the metaverse.
