This is the game that was announced four years ago and still hasn’t been released — which doesn’t look promising for fans.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had positive updates about the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Originally revealed at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, the project has been mired in development troubles. Aspyr’s first version was reportedly scrapped, and development was transferred to Saber Interactive. The last official word came in April 2024, when Saber CEO Matthew Karch stated the game was “alive and well.” However, it’s still unclear how much of Aspyr’s original work has been discarded, which could heavily influence when — or if — the remake ever sees release.

If you’re curious about the initial version, MP1st has unearthed a piece of concept art depicting one of the original game’s locations. The image appeared on a concept designer’s portfolio, who worked at Aspyr until 2021. It shows the treetops of Kashyyyk, the Wookiee homeworld featured in the 2003 game. A side-by-side comparison highlights the original version and the new concept, clearly showing the ambition to create a richer, denser environment. Unfortunately, we can only speculate on how this would have looked in the finished product.

The remake was first announced as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but according to insider Jeff Grubb, Sony has since stepped away from the project. As a result, if the game ever launches, it is expected to be released across multiple platforms — including Xbox Series, PC, and possibly even the Nintendo Switch 2.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the remake, Star Wars fans still have plenty to look forward to. Respawn Entertainment is developing the third Star Wars Jedi game, while Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based tactical game in the style of XCOM, is also on the way.
