Lies of P 2: Is AI Being Used in the Art Segment?

Round8 is looking for an AI creator to use generative artificial intelligence to generate content.

The job posting has appeared online and caused concern among fans regarding the sequel to Lies of P. Round8 Studio is looking for an “AI creator” to maximize the efficiency of the graphics production process and take the visual quality of games to a new level using generative AI technology. Generative AI technology is a sensitive topic in game development, especially when it comes to technology used for art or narrative development. When Larian Studios announced that they used generative AI to create concept art for Divinity, it sparked a fierce backlash. This seems to be exactly the role that Round8 Studio is looking to fill, as the job description includes creating character and background concept sketches, AI-based texturing, providing modeling assistance using image-to-3D technology, and creating assets.

According to the job posting, Round8 Studio is looking for individuals who can combine the creativity of artists with the productivity of AI to build a unique graphic design workflow. Although the ad specifically mentions creating concept art, the fact that the candidate will participate in developing the graphic workflow suggests that generative AI technology will be integrated into creating all graphic assets for Round8 Studio’s games. If Round8 believes that generative AI speeds up the creation of concept art, why would it choose to speed up only concept art and not the entire development process? Unless Round8 specifies otherwise, everything we see in the Lies of P sequel will likely bear the mark of generative AI at one or more points in the process of creating the final, publicly released version.

It will be interesting to see if this leads to a significant backlash against Round8 Studio. Larian faced serious criticism when it mentioned using generative AI. While many players and developers oppose this technology, there is no evidence that games created with generative AI – whether for graphics or voice acting – achieve poorer commercial results. Even among critics, games known to have used generative AI tools during development continue to receive widespread acclaim. A prime example is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Therefore, it is doubtful that, when Lies of P 2 is released, anyone will remember or care that Round8 used generative AI.

This doesn’t mean generative AI should or shouldn’t be used in its current form. It just means that, so far, most players don’t care enough to boycott games that use it.
