Amazon Has Cancelled Its New The Lord Of The Rings Game, Dealing A Major Blow To MMO Fans

Amazon Games has officially cancelled the The Lord of the Rings MMO it announced in 2023 in collaboration with Embracer Group and Middle-earth Enterprises. Rumors about the project’s cancellation had been circulating for months, but now Jeff Grattis, head of Amazon’s gaming division, has confirmed that the game is dead. It is another painful setback for Tolkien fans, who still have not received a recent big-budget game truly worthy of Middle-earth.

The video game history of The Lord of the Rings has been rough in recent years. Tolkien’s world should be fertile ground for huge, expensive, long-lasting projects, yet recent releases have either landed with lukewarm reception or disappeared into the same fog of announcements and cancellations. The Amazon Games MMO looked especially important because it was being developed by the team behind New World, and because Amazon appeared, at least in theory, to have the money and infrastructure required to support a major online RPG. The outcome, however, is painfully familiar: another The Lord of the Rings project has been thrown onto the cancellation pile.

Rumors about the cancellation appeared months ago. Several leaks claimed that the game had been quietly shut down, but Amazon had not rushed to clarify the situation. Now Jeff Grattis, head of Amazon’s gaming division, has confirmed to Eurogamer that the project has indeed been scrapped. The decision is especially awkward because the game was officially announced in 2023 with Embracer Group and Middle-earth Enterprises, but almost nothing was ever shown beyond a logo. That alone said plenty about how early and uncertain the project may have been.

The Game Cleared Pre-Production, But Not Amazon’s Restructuring

According to Eurogamer, the MMO’s pre-production phase was completed shortly before Amazon’s large round of layoffs in October 2025. The team had reportedly been aiming to begin active development in 2026, meaning the project was still in the planning, design, and concept stage rather than full production. Then came the aggressive restructuring, which appears to have hit Amazon’s gaming division hard enough that the The Lord of the Rings MMO did not survive. This is not a case of a game disappearing after a poor public showing. It collapsed before players could properly see what kind of Middle-earth it intended to build.

Grattis insists that Amazon has not completely abandoned Tolkien’s world. According to him, the creative team is still exploring the universe and looking for gaming experiences that can do justice to Tolkien. “Our creative team continues to explore this universe, seeking compelling gaming experiences that do justice to Tolkien; we are working closely with Middle-earth Enterprises and remain excited about the IP,” he explained. That sounds reassuring enough, but it comes without specifics. It is not clear whether Amazon is planning another The Lord of the Rings game, thinking about a different genre, or simply leaving the door open for a possible future restart.

  • The Lord of the Rings MMO – cancelled after completing pre-production, before active development properly began.
  • New World – Amazon’s flagship game, set to shut down in 2026 despite its costly investment and the Aeternum relaunch.
  • Amazon Luna – the cloud gaming service received a facelift in 2025, but will cease operations in 2026 after failing to attract enough subscribers.

That context explains why the current state of Amazon Games does not inspire much confidence. The company has invested heavily in video game development, but the major breakthrough remains elusive. New World seemed like Amazon’s big arrival in 2021, yet after the initial wave of interest, it failed to become the kind of long-term MMO success that could justify its scale. The Aeternum reboot brought players back, but not enough to secure the game’s future. Amazon Luna tells a similarly sobering story: the cloud gaming service tried to reinvent itself in 2025, but it never attracted a large enough subscriber base, and it too will close in 2026.

Middle-earth May Have Better Luck Away From Amazon

The gaming future of The Lord of the Rings is not necessarily dead, but Amazon’s path now looks increasingly unconvincing. Several rumors suggest that a AAA The Lord of the Rings game may be in development at Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the modern Tomb Raider reboot trilogy. That remains unconfirmed, but if true, it could be a far more interesting direction than another vague MMO announcement that vanishes for years. Warhorse Studios was also mentioned at one point in connection with a possible open world Middle-earth game, but those hints were misinterpreted, and the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 team does not currently appear to be involved.

For Amazon, this cancellation is not just an isolated failure. It is another sign that the company’s gaming ambitions have been much harder to turn into lasting success than its investment level would suggest. The The Lord of the Rings name is an enormous opportunity, which is exactly why it hurts when a project tied to it dies before properly introducing itself. Fans are now back in a familiar place: waiting for a truly ambitious Middle-earth game, while announcements, rumors, and cancellations keep eating away at their patience.
