A colleague quickly advised him to tone down his enthusiasm for it, but one thing is clear from the situation.
Although Final Fantasy VII is widely considered one of the best entries in the series, if not the best, many believe that Final Fantasy VI is just as good, if not better, and deserves a full remake. It’s no surprise, then, that so many AI-based remake concepts have been shared online recently. However, it is surprising that one of them caught the attention of the series’ creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi.
Sakaguchi called what was shared “amazing” on Twitter. The concept is a fresh, AI-based remake of the game depicting several iconic scenes, including Sabin’s suplex on the Phantom Train and moments from the Opera House scene where Celes takes Maria’s place to trick Setzer into kidnapping her. However, this high praise from the creator of one of the most popular JRPG series of all time appears to be an isolated opinion, both within the community and among fellow developers. Akitoshi Kawazu, creator of the SaGa series and a game designer on the original Final Fantasy and its sequel, immediately suggested Sakaguchi stop.

At the same time, he believes that Final Fantasy VI deserves a 3D remake. The other day, he chatted with an American MIT graduate at a sushi restaurant. The man was visiting Shimokitazawa as a tourist and mentioned that he loves Final Fantasy VI and Mash. I think FFVI is definitely suitable for a 3D remake. Members of the community have also pointed out that something isn’t quite right with the Final Fantasy VI AI remake. One commenter thought that, if Square Enix were to make the remake, Locke and Tina wouldn’t look like that. They believe that the creators themselves are the only ones who can capture the subtle details that make a big difference.
There seems to be a clear consensus on one thing: Final Fantasy VI deserves a remake. A decade-long project like the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is unlikely, but with the release of its third and final installment approaching, Square Enix is probably discussing the future of the series beyond the franchise’s 17th main entry, which has not yet been officially announced. However, since Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, would rather support a new creator than direct another remake, it remains to be seen whether another developer would be willing to take on such a highly anticipated project.
