The rumors were right: the franchise’s next game really puts Kratos’s wife in the lead instead of Kratos himself!
Experience the next chapter of the God of War franchise, built for both new and returning fans. Death was supposed to be the end of everything, but for Laufey, also known as Faye, Kratos’s warrior wife, a new adventure is only just beginning. After unexpectedly waking up in a strange land after her death, Faye realizes that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now in jeopardy. To save her loved ones, she must fight through the afterlife of the gods, the Everywhen, where ruthless deities from different mythologies struggle for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic. Use Faye’s speed, control, and relentlessness to defeat even the fiercest enemies with decisive, deadly precision.
Brutal combat. A rich, beautiful world to explore. A story at its center. From the beginning, the developers knew that God of War: Laufey had to include every core element that defines a God of War game. Faye has always been a formidable warrior in this story. She and Kratos can both hit hard and take punishment, so one of the team’s biggest priorities during development was creating a uniquely fresh feel for Faye’s gameplay while still meeting the high expectations fans have for the series. By combining the movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era’s approach to world-building and close character bonds, the team created an experience that opened the door to exciting creative experiments while staying true to the pillars of God of War.
Faye has long been one of the defining figures of the Norse mythology within God of War. This legendary warrior and leader had already left her mark on the Nine Realms long before she ever met Kratos. God of War: Laufey puts Faye at the center, exploring the humanity, strength, and flaws of the woman whose legacy was loved by so many. During the events of God of War: Ragnarök, Odin was haunted by the prophecy of his own death and became obsessed with pursuing knowledge beyond the afterlives of mortals. The Everywhen is the birthplace and final destination to which all magic returns: a transcendent realm above the ones we already know. It is a place where gods and creatures from different mythologies meet, and not always in peaceful coexistence.
The reveal offered a short look at two gods Faye will encounter in the Everywhen: Sekhmet and Begtse, both of whom are decidedly unfriendly toward the new face who suddenly appears among them. Faye quickly realizes that while waking from death in a place that contradicts everything she thought she knew seems impossible enough, leaving it may prove even harder while the natural flow of magic has been disrupted. Paradise or prison? Faye must uncover the hidden secrets behind the true nature of the Everywhen during her journey if she is to have any hope of returning home.
After playing Faye in God of War: Ragnarök, the fantastic Deborah Ann Woll returns to lead the cast of God of War: Laufey. Faye does not venture into the Everywhen alone, since she finds two companions shortly after waking up. Phranque, played by Jack Quaid, is a curious, earnest cosmic cube who does everything he can to protect his friends and the beings of the Everywhen. Rue, played by Perlina Lau, is the guardian of an enchanted ribbon, tasked with making sure the devastating sword in her care does not fall into the wrong hands. Together, they set out on a journey deep into the Everywhen, where they will face gods and creatures from different mythological realms, along with the Everywhen’s own native inhabitants.
As the Golden Hand of the Jotnar, Faye has deep roots as a warrior and has proven that even Thor, one of the strongest gods in the Nine Realms, is a worthy opponent rather than an impossible wall. From the beginning, her combat style was designed to maximize lethality, power, and fluid movement. Building on the strengths of modern God of War combat while injecting classic old-school DNA from the Greek era, this chapter should feel fresh yet familiar to series fans. Faye can move smoothly between ground and air without breaking the action, creating a hyper-responsive combat style that the developers say players will feel the first time they pick up the controller. Her increased mobility gives her plenty of offensive and defensive tools that can turn even battles against the fiercest gods in her favor.
As the former owner of the Leviathan Axe, Faye is no stranger to legendary weapons. After arriving in the Everywhen, she earns the trust of Rue, the sword’s guardian, enough to wield the blade during their escape from imprisonment. In Faye’s expert hands, the weapon reveals its full potential. Speed, control, and relentlessness define Faye’s combat rhythm: she builds and maintains momentum from one attack to the next, on the ground and in the air, unleashing a merciless assault on her enemies.
The Giants of Jotunheim possessed such immense magical power that even Odin saw them as one of the greatest threats to his rule over the Nine Realms. As the Golden Hand of the Jotnar and the most powerful protector of the Giants, Faye wielded fearsome powers, including the ability to manipulate souls. After arriving in the afterlife of the gods, a place steeped in ancient magic, Faye’s soul-related abilities are greatly amplified. In the Everywhen, Faye can strike an enemy with her golden palm so hard that their soul is torn away from their body. From there, she can attack the soul directly, knock it into other enemies, and more, opening up combos and creative uses that players will be able to master.
God of War: Laufey is in development for PlayStation 5, but no release date has been announced yet.
