Nightdive Studios took supporting fan-created content just as seriously in this remaster…
While the DOOM and Quake map-making communities are larger and more prolific, the fan mission creators behind Thief: The Dark Project punch far above their weight. They regularly create levels, missions, and full campaigns that are vastly more ambitious than what can be found in the base game.
That is why any Thief remaster worthy of its name should properly support the fan mission community. That is precisely what Nightdive Studios plans to do with Thief: The Dark Project Remastered. In the Nightdive Deep Dive podcast, producer Daniel Grayshon discussed the importance of community-created content for the remaster in detail.
Given the huge number of available fan missions, this is an extremely ambitious goal. Grayshon added that, while the aim is to support as many missions as possible, Nightdive’s resources are not unlimited. However, one specific fan campaign will definitely be playable when the game launches.
That campaign is The Black Parade, released in 2023. It is a ten-mission campaign with its own story, overseen by Arkane Lyon level designer Romain Barrilliot. Every level in this magnificent tribute to Thief is exceptionally ambitious, detailed, and often terrifying. Alongside Deathloop and the System Shock remake, it can be considered one of the best immersive sims of the past decade.
Naturally, Nightdive is well aware of The Black Parade’s reputation.
“There is a very dedicated community that has created all kinds of wonderful additions to the game, and a lot of that has not gone unnoticed. Compatibility with these additions is extremely important, and that is exactly what we are working very hard on, to make sure that if you buy the PC version of the game, you can set up any fan mission you want to play very easily and quickly. We are doing everything we can to ensure full compatibility with every piece of content that can be tested within the time available to us. There is a huge amount of content out there, but we are doing our best.
The obvious big one is The Black Parade. If I remember correctly, it won ModDB’s best mod of the year award that year. Just looking at the reactions to our announcement, I noticed people saying they could not wait to see how The Black Parade would run on this version. I knew from the beginning that this was what people would be waiting for, and the reaction to the announcement proved that I was right. We are working as quickly and thoroughly as possible to make sure the content people want to play is compatible.” Daniel Grayshon said.
Alongside the remaster, Eidos Montréal recently announced a comic book set between Thief 1 and Thief 2, as well as several other additions, including a new soundtrack. Now all we need is a new game from someone who actually understands the franchise.
