Instead of fighting biological weapons, Leon S. Kennedy would rather go fishing and finally land a big catch…
Hideki Kamiya gained his first major experience with the Resident Evil games as the designer of the original game and then as the director of Resident Evil 2, before moving on to projects including Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta, and The Wonderful 101.
Ironically, he is not really a fan of the horror genre himself. He recently said that he would like a “non-scary mode” in Resident Evil games, so understandably he is not especially interested in returning to the franchise. But if he did return, he would handle things very differently: he would make the game cozier.
Despite trolling on X several times in the past, Kamiya seems serious this time.

“If I made it, it would turn into a game where retired Leon goes fishing in the countryside, forages for wild vegetables, bakes bread, walks the dog, tends a home garden, drives 50 km to the general store for supplies, invites old buddies over for a barbecue, fixes the neighborhood grandma’s oven at her request, and sells homemade lemonade at the local festival. But that would be cool, right?
Capcom, lots of people are saying they want a Resident Evil that is not scary. So, if you have a little free time, please consider making it. I want to play it too.” Kamiya wrote on X in response to a request for a new game continuing the story of Leon and Claire.
This is a side of gaming’s action heroes that is rarely explored: what do they do when they are not saving the world? It could also be a fun way to introduce the series to newcomers who may not be drawn to traditional zombie survival horror games.
Besides, if there is already a dating simulator inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos, why could there not be a cozy Resident Evil spin-off as well? Never say never: as announced at The Game Awards 2024, Kamiya is currently working at his new Clovers studio on a sequel to Capcom’s 2006 classic Okami.
