Is Docked VRR Support Still in the Works for the Nintendo Switch 2?

Although job postings do not confirm it, they imply that the Japanese company still intends to implement this feature.

The Nintendo Switch 2 does not support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which is critical, when docked, even though pre-launch information indicated that it was originally planned. However, a recently leaked job posting suggests that Nintendo has not completely abandoned this idea. The company is seeking a lead display engineer whose responsibilities would include designing, developing, and implementing a display driver package for current and future products, developing and refining the display software package to ensure compliance with various display standards and specifications, and researching and promoting new features and technologies that can be successfully integrated into widely used game consoles.

While the job description doesn’t mention VRR support for the Nintendo Switch 2, one of the preferred qualifications is knowledge of display technologies, such as HDR and VRR. This doesn’t mean they’re working on VRR support for the Nintendo Switch 2 in docked mode, but it’s a strong indication that they are. Since the system’s display already supports VRR, Nintendo would need to hire a new engineer with VRR expertise only if the company were planning something new related to this increasingly important feature in PC and console gaming.

In addition to potentially addressing one of the Nintendo Switch 2’s biggest shortcomings, Nintendo is reportedly working on a new hardware variant alongside a model with a removable battery set to launch in Europe. Last month, a redesigned LCD screen was discovered, suggesting that the company might bring back the hardware lottery players contended with in the 3DS era.

Who would be happy not knowing what kind of screen the device inside the box will ultimately have? Not us.
