The new Battlefield game is following in Fortnite’s footsteps. However, crossovers aren’t as common here as they are in Epic Games’ title.
After nine months, Battlefield 6 will finally receive its most requested feature. On July 21, the series will get naval combat again thanks to Tsuru Reef, the game’s largest map. It features two ships and additional weapons. Even more interesting is what’s coming in Phase 2 of Season 4 on August 18: the classic Battlefield map Wake Island will be updated with aircraft carrier spawn points and beach assaults. At the same time, Battlefield 6 is organizing a Top Gun crossover. This adds a new two-seater jet in the style of the movies and brings back a mode that first debuted in Battlefield 2142 in 2006.
Top Gun: Carrier Strike, based on Battlefield 4’s Carrier Assault mode and 2142’s Titan mode, pits two teams against each other. They must sink the enemy aircraft carrier according to the Conquest game mode rules. Players must capture flags to launch a barrage of missiles at the enemy carrier. Ultimately, this culminates in a ground assault on the carriers, as it did in previous games. Carrier Strike has been reworked, which could mean anything. It’s amusing and somewhat disheartening that the old features are being reintroduced as a branded crossover, as if the only justification for creating an exciting game mode is if it’s sponsored by Paramount. At least, though, Top Gun aesthetically aligns with Battlefield. This makes more sense than when Battlefield 6 featured a Red Bull–sponsored motocross track a few months ago.
Another Top Gun–themed game mode is also coming, but you’ll have to search for it in RedSec.
Top Gun: Fighter Sweep is a Gauntlet mission that can only be played with jet aircraft. It is set on the modified Tsuru Reef map. These aircraft will also be available on Portal’s aircraft-only servers. Electronic Arts’ press release includes more quotes from the cast of Top Gun: Maverick (excluding Tom Cruise) than details about Carrier Strike. Miles “Rooster” Teller says it’s a huge honor to be part of a long-running franchise like Battlefield, which has millions of fans and is made by talented people. He adds that combining it with Top Gun is like two titans colliding.
We’ll have to wait until August for the Top Gun–themed Battlefield 6.
