The new Zelda isn’t exactly new since it’s a remake of an older game. Reportedly, we won’t have to wait much longer for it.

GameStop hinted in a search result that Nintendo might open pre-orders for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake on August 4, which could mean that we’ll finally get to see proper gameplay footage of the game. Only a short teaser was shown during the June Nintendo Direct. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the game ever since rumors about it began circulating in March. So far, there hasn’t been much official information. There was a description on Nintendo’s website that was quickly removed. According to the description, the N64 classic will be reborn as a full remake on the Nintendo Switch 2. This will allow us to enjoy Ocarina of Time with stunning graphics, an updated design, and timeless gameplay.

This last sentence caught our attention because it suggests that Nintendo will leave the core structure, gameplay, and dungeon layout of the original 1998 game untouched. To this day, the original game remains the highest-rated of all time, with a score of 99 on Metacritic. A massive, open-world remake in the style of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom is unlikely. The remake will likely stick to the traditional, linear, dungeon-crawling gameplay.

At the same time, fans are expecting modernized controls, such as dual-joystick camera tracking, which was missing from the original game, as well as a completely revamped, less tedious menu system. We do know that the game will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. This will allow for seamless transitions between Hyrule Field, Castle Town, and the various dungeons without load screens. This will remedy the choppy, load-screen-filled pacing of the N64 era.

The game is set to be released sometime this year. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo cares about Grand Theft Auto VI—most of the industry is avoiding November 19.
