A strange bug is crashing online Smash Bros. Ultimate battles between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 players—if even one person picks a Mii Fighter, the entire match can end instantly. As if that wasn’t enough, GameStop employees have managed to accidentally punch holes in the screens of the brand-new consoles just by stapling receipts, causing a different kind of chaos for gamers.
The arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 has gamers everywhere rushing to test what this new hardware can handle, putting its backward compatibility to the test with popular titles. While most original Switch games run with no problem, some nasty surprises have cropped up—especially for fans of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In an unexpected twist, picking a Mii Fighter can crash online matches whenever one player is on a Switch and another is using a Switch 2, ruining battles before they even begin.
Nintendo has gone public about this odd bug, explaining the situation on its Japanese support page (first spotted by OatmealDome on X). “During online matches, if a Nintendo Switch 2 player is matched with someone using a regular Switch and a Mii Fighter appears, the battle may suddenly end. Please avoid selecting Mii Fighters online until a fix arrives.”
There’s another twist: “If you create or change a Mii Fighter and save it, sometimes the Mii’s image might not show up properly. Saving again may help,” the company adds. Nintendo has assured fans that a patch is already in the works, and online showdowns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will soon be back to normal.
GameStop’s Receipt Stapling Blunder Damages Switch 2 Screens
Software bugs can usually be fixed with a quick update, but GameStop’s mistake caused real-world headaches for unlucky customers. At several stores, employees used staplers to attach receipts directly to new Nintendo Switch 2 units—without realizing they were driving staples straight through the screens. The retailer has apologized to those affected and promised replacements for every damaged console.
Between unexpected software crashes and hardware mishaps, it seems the launch of the Switch 2 hasn’t been short on drama. The good news? Nintendo and GameStop are both moving quickly to make things right for their fans.
