Iron Gate and Coffee Stain Publishing have taken a very cautious route, but at least the game will reach version 1.0, which is more than some titles manage.
Deep North is the final biome of Valheim, filled with ancient evils and lurking dangers. What first appears to be a picturesque postcard soon becomes a fight for survival as the land awakens to drive away any invaders who attempt to set foot on its icy shores. When players first arrive in Deep North, they will likely be greeted by an impenetrable snowstorm, which, once it passes, reveals snow-covered plateaus and fields frozen in eternal stillness. As they cautiously begin exploring the area, they discover vast but abandoned villages, and soon realize that they are not the first Vikings to wander there.
The northernmost biome is home to some of the oldest threats in the game. When the trolls of Valheim become too old, they migrate to Deep North to become one with the land, transforming into Gammeltrolls – ancient giants who serve as guardians of the north. Although the surface may appear desolate, the world beneath Deep North is full of life. Vikings who came here before were attacked and defeated by the evil Elakingar, who dig deep tunnels into the earth. Adventurers must proceed carefully, however, because these malicious fiends are sometimes accompanied by something far more terrifying.
With the official launch of version 1.0, Valheim will come to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in addition to its availability on PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. Valheim will support full cross-platform play, allowing players from around the world to enjoy the tenth Norse realm however and with whomever they like.
“When we set out on this journey back in 2021, we could hardly imagine how many players would dive in and how big the community around the game would become. Approaching 1.0 is both exciting and anxiety-inducing, as we’ve worked hard to make Deep North a worthy conclusion to the Valheim journey!” – wrote Robin Eyre, creative director at Iron Gate, in the press release.
Valheim first launched in Early Access on PC on February 2, 2021. That was followed by an Early Access release on Xbox Series and Xbox One on March 14, 2023. Version 1.0 will arrive on September 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Mac, Linux, and Xbox One.
