Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Got a Native iPhone/iPad Port Thanks to AI!

The port supports touchscreen controls, but it’s best to have plenty of RAM because it can be demanding in that regard.

While not every AI model owned by Anthropic will produce the desired results, the company’s Claude Fable 5 model is sure to achieve legendary status among those looking to port timeless classics like Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour without encountering issues. One user demonstrated just how easy this task is. The game’s native version even works with touchscreen support on the iPad.

Electronic Arts released the game’s source code under the GPL v3 license. According to Ammar Reshi, the porting process required no emulator because the 2003 engine had already been ported to the ARM64 platform, ensuring a seamless transition. The tweet states that version 4.8 of Anthropic Opus could not complete the task, even on ultra settings, but Claude Fable 5 overcame this limitation. Some might argue that Red Alert 2 would have been a better choice for porting to the iPad or iPhone. Unfortunately, according to Reshi, Electronic Arts lost the game’s source code, making the task extremely complicated.

The native port of Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour offers Campaign, Skirmish, and Generals Challenge modes, along with the full audio package. Touchscreen controls are also available for the iPad and iPhone, including dragging the selection frame, two-finger camera panning, and two-finger zooming. To try Generals Zero Hour on Apple platforms, you must install a copy on Steam. After that, a script will download the data from your account. Reshi noted that the iPad version of the game may crash during extended play sessions due to low memory. In this case, the app returns to the home screen without displaying an error message.

It seems that playing the Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour port on Apple devices with more RAM is better, since the app can consume up to 3 GB of memory or more.
