A Classic Spongebob Squarepants Game Is Getting A New Version! [VIDEO]

We were afraid to write its name in the title, as it’d have been like three lines long, so we’ll name it here: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is coming! (Can anyone pronounce it with one breath?)

THQ Nordic planned an announcement each for June 5, 6, and 7, respectively. This one is for June 5, and it’s not the strongest start, to be fair, as they revealed that they are updating (or pretty much remaking) a game that came out in the Fall of 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, and even the Game Boy Advance. (Aside from the GBA port, it used the Renderware middleware engine, which was famously utilized by Rockstar for the PS2 Grand Theft Auto trilogy, namely III, Vice City, and San Andreas.) The 3D platformer is being remade by Purple Lamp Studios, and it will have multiplayer, as well as a restored cut boss fight versus Robo-Squidward. It sounds good on paper, but shouldn’t it have been a better idea to license Spongebob for a brand NEW game by Nickelodeon?

„[…] The cult classic is back, faithfully remade […]! Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and show the evil Plankton that crime pays even less than Mr Krabs. Want to save Bikini Bottom from lots of rampant robots with your mighty bubbles? Of course, you do! Want to underpants bungee jump? Why wouldn’t you! Want to join forces in a brand new multiplayer mode? The battle is on! […] Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and use their unique sets of skills. […] Faithful remake of one of the best SpongeBob games ever created. […] Brand new horde mode multiplayer for up to two players, online and split-screen. Restored content that was cut from the original game like the Robo Squidward boss fight and more,” the game’s Steam page says.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
