It looks like Microsoft‘s Project Scorpio E3 reveal happened partially because of the rival company.
Even before June, we heard about the stronger PlayStation 4 model, which was called as PS4 Neo back then – it was confirmed (but not revealed until September!) by Sony. Windows Central writes about how despite only a few developers seeing the stronger Xbox One before the reveal, the „green team” was cornered and forced to reveal the Project Scorpio perhaps much earlier than they would have done so.
Windows Central also mentions how the Scorpio will be able to play UWP games (remember, Windows Store games on Windows 10 has this system!) natively in 4K resolution. Some titles, such as Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3, are rumored to get a 4K edition. The developers have to do some „trivial” changes to run any UWP-based games on the newer Xbox One model. There’s a twist to this story, though, and that would be Microsoft‘s approach to developer kits.
They would be a „one-stop shop” for all development on the platform, allowing devs to test the game on different configurations, including an Xbox One-specific mode, mimicking the current console’s performance. The games will be able to detect the hardware used to run them and download the necessary assets. (To use a quote from Lord of the Rings: one devkit above all?) An example would be Gwent: The Witcher Card Game – as it’s a UWP development, it’s supporting Project Scorpio by default.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 Pro launches tomorrow…
