Gaming As A Mental Disorder: Another Opposer!

Another company stepped up to ask the World Health Organization to reconsider their actions.

A few weeks ago, we wrote about how from 2018, the ICD-11 document would list video gaming addiction as a mental health disorder. However, the Electronic Software Association (ESA) issued a statement which tries to oppose the WHO. Quote:

„Just like avid sports fans and consumers of all forms of engaging entertainment, gamers are passionate and dedicated to their time. Having captivated gamers for more than four decades, more than 2 billion people around the world enjoy video games. The World Health Organization knows that common sense and objective research prove video games are not addictive. And, putting that official label on them recklessly trivializes real mental health issues like depression and social anxiety disorder, which deserve treatment and the full attention of the medical community. We strongly encourage the World Health Organization to reverse direction on its proposed action.”

As the ICD-11 is in a draft format at the moment, the WHO still has plenty of time to perhaps remove gaming addiction from their officially recognized of mental health disorders. It might happen… or maybe not.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
