Anthem – According to a BioWare veteran, the „conspiracy theories” surrounding the game aren’t true

James Ohlen doesn’t share the players’ opinion.

Anthem looks quite different from what we’ve got used to from BioWare. Jade Empire, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age. All of these games were dialogue-focused single-player RPG games. Anthem, however, is a game that requires a constant internet connection and it’s a multiplayer shooter with limited, or non-existent dialogue options. It’s not a surprise then that a lot of people are disappointed after seeing the studios’ new direction and many people assume that it’s only because of the publisher behind the studio, EA.

James Ohlen, who worked as a narrative director at BioWare for 22 years (he left in June), said that this is simply a conspiracy theory.

Ohlen said the following to GameInformer: “I think one of the things about BioWare has been really good at it, which has allowed it to survive for more than two decades, is taking risks and trying new and different things. [But] the fact that BioWare is doing something different with Anthem doesn’t mean that BioWare isn’t going to do games that skew more towards the traditional style that BioWare is known for. It’s just a chance to do something a little different. It was driven by BioWare itself, the team. I know there’s a lot of the conspiracy theories that EA is the one behind it, but that’s never been the case. BioWare‘s always had a lot of control over the kind of games it makes.”

Anthem will release in February 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
