Facebook (Oculus) Continues Expanding: They Acquire Sanzaru Games

Sanzaru Games, which previously worked on the Sly Collection or Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, is now part of the Oculus Studios.

Facebook announced that the acquisition means their Oculus Studios team is even bigger. It was somehow bound to happen, as, since 2016, Sanzaru made several games for them (VR Sports Challenge, Marvel Powers United VR, Asgard’s Wrath). In its Q&A, Facebook considers Sanzaru a veteran, and the acquisition means they can „explore a future of rich and immersive original virtual reality content.”

They added that Sanzaru „will continue to build amazing virtual reality experiences as an independent studio operating out of their current offices in the United States and Canada, with the full support of Facebook and the passionate Oculus Studios team behind them.” However, they are not ready to announce what they will do next (it will be for Oculus devices), they only say Asgard’s Wrath was a big success. „The vast majority of Sanzaru will be joining the Oculus Studios team,” which means either some people get fired, or they decided to leave.

Here’s a bit of corporate-sounding blurb from Facebook: „We’re exploring many ways to accelerate virtual reality, and 2020 is going to be an incredible year for virtual reality game launches and announcements. We are thrilled to have Sanzaru joining our team. This is just one of the many amazing virtual reality announcements we have in store this year.” Which sounds like they will likely acquire more studios in 2020. We’ll see. They want to make VR serious, which is why they have the Oculus Rift S, the Oculus Quest (which can be used without a PC), or the Oculus Touch controllers.

Recently, Facebook also bought Beat Studios, the group behind the otherwise excellent Beat Saber, so it was bound to happen. Sanzaru hasn’t worked on many non-VR games recently (except for Tron RUN/r or their work on the third game in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy).
