Is System Shock 3’s New Publisher Found?

Warren Spector, one of the veterans of the gaming industry, has been looking for a publisher for System Shock 3 last year. He might have found someone behind the scenes…

Recently, we haven’t heard much of the new System Shock, even though it’s been a while since the launch of System Shock 2 (it came out in 1999). Now there is some potentially positive news: VGC reports that the domains for both SystemShock3.com and SystemShock4.com have been purchased, and on DomainTools, we also get confirmation of the potential publisher candidate. It’s… Tencent!?

OtherSide Entertainment, the dev team of System Shock 3 uses a different site to publish news about the game, but the fact that the two sites’ domains have been moved to Tencent on April 13 is suspicious. Last May, Warren Spector, the creative director, said that they are willing to self-publish the game, but they’d prefer to have a publishing partner. Since September (when they released a pre-alpha teaser), we haven’t seen the game, and since then, all we heard that there have been layoffs at the company. (We wrote about all of these. Their Boston studio’s vice president of marketing and business developments said that they work on a new concept, but then he left the company. Meanwhile, their Austin studio is who work on System Shock 3.)

Let’s hope that there won’t be problems this time: Tencent could be the second publisher of System Shock 3. The first one was Starbreeze, but the Swedish company (who poured 12 million bucks into the project, then flopped massively in 2018 with Overkill’s The Walking Dead) has been in financial trouble, which is why OtherSide gained back the IP’s publishing rights, although they also had to pay back the 12 million.

A Chinese company with ties to the state party, which is also present in Ubisoft, Quantic Dream, and around PlatinumGames. Interesting if true – but since the press got mislead with Prince of Persia 6’s domain, we have our doubts. System Shock 4…?
