Epic Games claims that this technology has enabled them to fulfil a dream.
One of the main attractions of the new generation of consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, is its graphics. With the spectacular presentation of Unreal Engine 5, the potential of this new Epic Games engine has put the cards on the table, and there is little left for us to enjoy it on the new consoles.
The company’s CTO, Kim Liberi, has spoken to the official PlayStation magazine in the UK and discussed the long-term goals of this new engine. When he mentions Nanite technology, Liberi adds that a graphic quality “as realistic as a film” will be achieved.
“It has been a lifelong dream that real-time computer graphics, and in particular of games, can be as credible and realistic as a movie,”
said the executive.
“State-of-the-art graphics and processing power will not only make games more immersive but will also enable entirely new game concepts that can take advantage of fully dynamic environments and lighting, vastly improved physics, smarter artificial intelligence and multiplayer experiences richer, “he continued.
Recall that Unreal Engine is also being used in the film industry, as is the case with The Mandalorian and how it will also be applied in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Now with Nanite technology from Unreal Engine 5, the barriers to creating complex real-time assets have been removed and the results are “truly photorealistic,” according to Liberi.
Unreal Engine 5 will arrive in its preliminary version at the beginning of next year, while its launch is still scheduled at the end of it. On the other hand, the new generation of consoles still has a lot to show, as Electronic Arts says it plans to bring more visceral video games to PS5 and Xbox Series X. In the meantime, we are still waiting for the week of July 20, when we could see what’s new in the Xbox catalogue.
