Will Microsoft Rename Or Even End Xbox Live Gold?

The company says the Xbox Live Gold brand is important to them now and will continue to be so in the future. But will the service be discontinued?

Despite recent rumors, it appears that Microsoft has no intention of changing the name of Xbox Live, nor of stopping offering the Xbox Live Gold subscription. The alarms had jumped in recent weeks because the Redmond company does not allow the service to be renewed with a twelve-month subscription. Furthermore, after the company announced changes to its service agreement, it stopped referring to Xbox Live as such to speak of “Xbox online service.”

The tech giant has clarified the situation in a statement to The Verge, claiming that “The Xbox online service update in the Microsoft Services Agreement refers to the underlying Xbox service that includes features such as cross saves and friend requests”. At the same time they stated that “No changes are being made to the service experience or Xbox Live Gold.”

Rumors had speculated quite strongly that Xbox Live Gold would disappear, and that the service could even go as far as stop being enjoyable anymore due to the end of the service. From Microsoft they have said in the same communication that “they have no plans to discontinue Xbox Live Gold at this time,” and that it is “an important part of Xbox games today and will continue to be so in the future.”

In any case, and being in the anteroom of the new generation of consoles, it is evident that Microsoft is in a time of change with Xbox Series X in mind. They recently changed the Game Pass logo, removing the word Xbox from the logos. To that we add the constant rumors, for now denied, and it is normal for confusion to reign. The marketing battle that Sony and Microsoft are waging leads to these somewhat abstract communications at times, causing confusion among users.
