Is Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver Getting A Remaster?

Legacy of Kain hasn’t been used in general for a long time, but there could be a remaster of one of the games in the series if the rumours are to be believed.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was one of the widely known entries in the series, and it could be preparing for a return on modern hardware, according to Shpeshal Nick, the co-founder of the XboxEra podcast. He thinks the game’s reveal could happen either at Gamescom (so in late August) or during The Game Awards (in the first half of December).

Let’s talk a bit about who even owns the Legacy of Kain license nowadays. Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver launched in 1999 on PlayStation and PC, followed by a Dreamcast port in 2000. Aside from the SEGA console’s port (which was handled by Nixxes Software BV), the game was developed by Crystal Dynamics, and published by Eidos Interactive. As Eidos was acquired by Square Enix, the Japanese publisher is the one who owns the IP all the way.

Now, a bit of interesting trivia: Raziel’s character (he happens to be the protagonist of Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver) was created by Amy Hennig, who also directed the game. (She also worked on the predecessor, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.) Yes, the same person who then moved on to direct Jak 3 and play a pivotal role in creating Uncharted, before working on a single-player Star Wars title (codenamed Ragtag) that ended up getting scrapped by Electronic Arts when the publisher shut the doors of Visceral Games!

Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver is a solid third-person action-adventure game, set 1500 years after Blood Omen. The story in short: Kain, the vampire lord, kills his lieutenant Raziel. He then gets revived by The Elder God to become his soul reaver and enact revenge on Kain. The gameplay allowed us to shift between two worlds, as Raziel was no longer a vampire (he became a wraith).

It’s not official yet, but it could be an interesting move by Square Enix.
