PlayStation 5 is it Hot or Cold?! The Battle of Youtubers Continues!

The battle whether proving right that the new redesigned PlayStation 5 is worse or better continues, and it looks like new evidence might show that it is not worse.

A couple of days ago, a Youtuber named Austin Evans had stirred controversy relating to Sony’s latest redesign of the PlayStation 5, stating that it runs hotter.  However, the analysis was a bit lacklustre upon further review, as Austin only measured the heat coming out of the exhaust of the new redesigned PlayStation 5.

He did not look at the internals while running the machine. He did compare the two side by side while it was off, showing that the newer version of the PlayStation 5 has a smaller heatsink, and certain materials were changed to be cheaper in terms of manufacturing cost.

A Youtuber called Hardware Busters has done extensive testing of the new hardware, taking heat measurements from the internals, while Idle, and also while gaming – using Devil May Cry 5 as one of the examples to test the difference between the machines.

The tests that Hardware Busters have done actually show that the PS5 CPU runs cooler by nearly 10 degrees Celsius, but the memory ran hotter than the old PS5. However, it does show that the smaller heatsink is more efficient and allows the CPU to run cooler.

One caveat with this test is that only one unit was tested and that results could be slightly different between units. Still though, One point to Sony, Zero to Austin Evans with a heat cam!

We shall see if anybody else does extensive testing furthermore down the run. According to rumours, there will be a new 6nm PS5 in 2022, so maybe next year we will see another big battle between Sony and Youtubers
