The company trying to make PlayStation 5 faceplates says Sony refuses to tolerate them…
Dbrand wrote about what happened on Reddit. Sony previously threatened legal action after Dbrand gave its product, Darkplate, a unique take on the PlayStation symbols on the PlayStation 5. The company dared Sony to file a lawsuit, after which the “blue lawyers” stepped in with the good old C&D (cease and desist): either Dbrand stops with its product, which is deemed illegal, or a severe lawsuit will be filed.
“Did you know that Sony believes our distinctive and original ‘Illuminati Pyramid / Radiation Hazard / Skull & Crossbones / Angry Robot Head’ symbols, engraved inside the Darkplates, infringe on their trademarked button shapes? How the f__k did Squid Game get away with it? We’ve elected to submit to the terrorists’ demands… for now.
While we strongly believe in consumers’ rights to customize and modify their hardware with aftermarket components, your Darkplates are now a collector’s item. You know what they say – you either die a Darkplates owner, or you live long enough to see yourself become the scalper. In closing, f__k you and especially f__k Sony. Talk soon,” Dbrand wrote on Reddit. So they didn’t live long enough to become the villain, but they see Sony as the villain after being a hero for several console generations.
Dbrand has a point: Squid Game, Netflix’ popular series (which might turn into a video game shortly…), does use the circle, triangle, and square symbols, and indeed, Sony didn’t go after Netflix, even though the similarities are uncanny. And why doesn’t Sony allow customization? Especially how the Darkplate replaced the regular four icons with custom ones. How do those infringe on Sony’s rights?
While Dbrand’s comment is harsh, we can see why the company is angry. Perhaps Sony is protecting its property too much.
