Studio Behind Scorn Discusses Delay To 2022 And Development Problems

The first-person horror game adventure Scorn is now officially delayed to 2022, as revealed by a Kickstarter update posted last Friday.

Any fan of Alien and the unmistakable designs of H. R. Giger was captivated by Scorn. The atmospheric first-person action-horror game stood out for an exquisite visual where biological environments merge with sci-fi technology. Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe. Still, the game doesn’t seem to have had an easy development since we first learned of its existence in the summer of 2016.

Being a small start-up studio Ebb Software took to Kickstarter, funding their project in 2017 and releasing their first chapter planned for early 2018. The studio received new support and investment from Microsoft, Kowloon and Kepler, turning Scorn into a more ambitious project and generating further delays.

Although the game’s release was planned for this fall, its absence at GamesCom and the few new features shown in the game seems to have angered its Kickstarter backers, from where Ebb Software has released a harsh statement talking about the game’s situation and the problems faced by the studios when it comes to meeting deadlines.

From the studio, they respond to the absence of new gameplays by talking about the need to continue working on the game’s development without the interruption of preparing these videos. The studio gives the example of CD Projekt RED as a studio that knew how to do great marketing with Cyberpunk 2077, which did not help the game’s final result. Ebb Software believes CD Projekt RED should have delayed cyberpunk 2077 by a year, but “hype and shareholder pressure were more important.” Ebb reminds that no content showing development progress will help it arrive sooner, quite the opposite.

The problem of hype in the industry

Ebb Software has referred to the problem with the expectations generated by alluding to the need for the studio to generate them years in advance to get the necessary investment to carry out the project. The studio confesses that being new and unknown, they would never have raised the investment without generating expectations in advance. Still, they also remember that feeding them constantly can lead to frustration born from the time to launch. They have also acknowledged that if it were up to them, they would not have unveiled the game or done any marketing until six months before launch.

Scorn’s development also seems to have suffered a lot over the years. While not necessarily defining it as “development hell”, they acknowledge that 90% of the material made up to mid-2018 was scrapped entirely. Their statement also talks about their relationship with Microsoft, Kowloon and Kepler, companies that have invested in the project, celebrating the support received and acknowledging not having suffered any pressure from them.

Ebb Software has finished its press release talking about the delay of Scorn to 2022. Although it should have been made official in October, external circumstances have made the official confirmation of the delay to be postponed to December 10. They have also reminded backers that if lack of communication is an issue, “simply request a refund and be done.”
