Although Todd Howard’s next opus is still a year away from release, Bethesda Game Studios and Microsoft seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket with the Starfield.
On November 11, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition was released, and on the same day, a concert was held to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Skyrim. However, Howard had sneaked a particular Starfield Suite composition into the musical offering. Inon Zur will be the composer in Starfield, and it certainly sounds exquisite in the video below. The brief snippet in the 2018 E3 teaser was breathtaking, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. 1:01:47 – this is where it will sound familiar…
But that’s not all: while the soundtrack is playing, several concept art images from Starfield are on screen, and while they’re not gameplay, they do manage to show that Bethesda Game Studios has taken the game to new heights (and not just literally!), and they need to do it because after Fallout 76 (which was their first online attempt…) they need to restore their reputation (and let’s not forget that most of Howard’s games are buggy… this will be another test for the studio, which is now part of Microsoft).
Here’s a brief overview of the lore: “Our game is set in the year 2330, in a relatively small pocket of the Milky Way, in an area that extends outward from our solar system for approximately 50 light years. Around 20 years before the start of the game, the two largest factions in the Settled Systems, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective, engaged in the bloody Colony War.
Today, the major factions enjoy an uneasy peace, but the Settled Systems is still pretty dangerous. There are plenty of human threats out there, like Ecliptic mercenaries, the pirates of the Crimson Fleet, violent Spacers, or even the fanatical religious zealots of House Va’ruun. The organization known as Constellation is committed to uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy. And as one of its newest members, you’ll explore the deepest reaches of the Settled Systems, and you’ll find yourself at home… in the Starfield,” Bethesda wrote.
Starfield will launch on November 11 2022, on Xbox Series and PC. The game, in development since 2015, will get more details next Summer (E3?), and it will offer a detailed character customization. Also, mod support is planned.
