Housemarque has announced the new content available this month under the name Returnal: Ascension.

Returnal was one of the big PlayStation surprises of 2021 – recently nominated for a BAFTA in 8 categories! – an action game that built on the triple-A values to create a frantic and challenging game with an arcade spirit. Much has been said about how taxing this sci-fi shooter can be, but it seems Housemarque doesn’t want you to suffer alone.

To mark State of Play, the PlayStation studio has unveiled its next big update, a new co-op mode called Ascension and a survival mode called Tower of Sisyphus. Returnal Ascension will be available as a free update on 22 March.

To play in co-operative mode, you need to log into the Chronosis portal near the crash landing and create or join a public cycle, or if you prefer to play with a friend, you can create a private cycle. In Tower of Sisyphus, the game will test you in an escalation where the challenge gets bigger and bigger.

Each stage of the tower culminates in an encounter with Algos, which also gets more challenging as you progress through its floors. In keeping with the spirit of the arcade, this mode will also include progress tracking, scores and leaderboards where you can compete with friends to reach the top. The tower will also be accompanied by new narrative content. If you’ve already endured and enjoyed Returnal, you’ll be happy to know that the creators are already working on their next game.
