Days Gone has been in the news again this week, but not for the right reasons (there will be no sequel, a film adaptation is in the works instead).
Recently, Days Gone’s creative director John Garvin lashed out on Twitter when he wrote that low-rated “woke” review scores meant that Bend Studio’s game didn’t get the reviews he felt it deserved. (And that may have played a part in Sony essentially dropping the IP after the PC port because, while there will indeed be a movie adaptation, the sequel was canceled because the company doesn’t consider it a blockbuster franchise.) Interestingly, the game’s director Jeff Ross didn’t stand by Garvin on this one, even though he was similarly critical of the ratings for their post-apocalyptic creation. (Neither of them works at the studio anymore.)
Bend Studio, which previously developed Resistance: Retribution for PSP and Uncharted: Golden Abyss for PS Vita, got fed up with Garvin’s continued criticism, even though Days Gone has been out on PlayStation 4 for more than three and a half years (April 26, 2019) and the PC port is also 1.5 years old (May 18, 2021), and has issued a statement on Twitter dismissing their ex-colleague’s accusations:
“We are aware of the comments made by our previous creative director on Days Gone regarding his personal view on the critical reception of our intellectual property. Bend Studio does not share his sentiment, nor does it reflect the views of our team. Our studio is immensely proud of our work on Days Gone and is thankful to every developer who poured their heart and soul into it. We are incredibly humbled by the support of our Days Gone community, and we will continue to share your enthusiasm for our world and characters as we look toward the future,” the studio wrote.
Garvin has since made his Twitter account private, and it was fitting that he parted ways with the team at PlayStation Studios, as it has been several years since Days Gone was released. We need to move on from the past.
