Joker: Folie A Deux: Director Releases The First Photo From The Movie!

MOVIE NEWS – Todd Phillips, director of the sequel, has shared the first images of Joaquin Phoenix as the title character in Joker: Folie a Deux.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC slate is on track despite the turmoil of recent months. These include the highly anticipated Joker sequel, which again stars Joaquin Phoenix as a dark, realistic version of the Batman villain. Joker: Folie a Deux is not expected to be released until 2024. However, director Todd Phillips has already started teasing fans by revealing a new image of himself in the lead role.

The Joker became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time when it was released in 2019, the first to cross the $1 billion mark and the first to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Almost immediately, talk of a possible sequel began. But the Covid scare meant it was long before it became official. Earlier this year, the film’s title was announced, along with the information that the sequel would have a musical theme. And Lady Gaga will play the other lead role as Harley Quinn!

While many fans have happily provided fan art interpretations of what Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and Gaga’s Harley Quinn might look like in the new film, director Phillips has now offered a very early image of the title character via his Instagram account.

Joker 2: tripled budget and elaborate dance sequences?!

The original Joker was made on a very modest $50 million budget. But that changes in the sequel, thanks to the enormous success of the first film. Joker: Folie a Deux is reportedly closer to $150 million. Phillips and Phoenix claim a share of $20 million, while Lady Gaga is claiming $10 million. Together, that’s the entire budget of the first Joker, which immediately gives you an idea of why the budget has skyrocketed.

Reports earlier this year detailed a possible reason for the sequel’s musical orientation, claiming that the film would shift the main focus away from Arthur Fleck. It will still be a story about Fleck but told from the perspective of Gaga’s Quinn. They said at the time, “Apparently, Joker 2 isn’t so much a Joker movie, it’s a Harley Quinn… It’s from Harley Quinn’s perspective. And the reason it’s a musical is because that’s how she perceives her relationship with Joker.”

In addition to the two leads, Joker: Folie a Deux has filled its cast with a top-notch ensemble that will ensure that the film will provide an excellent supporting cast for its Oscar-winning lead.

Brendan Gleeson is one of the latest names to join Zazie Beetz, who reprises her role as Sophie Dumond, Catherine Keener and Jacob Lofland.

As Phillips noted in the caption, this is just day one. That means the director will soon share more behind-the-scenes photos from the set. Until then, it certainly looks like we’ll be getting more Arthur Fleck from Phoenix. It will be interesting to see how his character develops from the original film. Joker: Folie a Deux hits theatres on October 4, 2024.
