Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster Collection: The Physical Copy Is Too Expensive!

Square Enix announced (as we suspected when the ESRB review was published) earlier this year that the six Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster titles currently available for PC, iOS and Android are coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

So the first six Final Fantasy titles in 2D remastered form can be bought separately on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop shortly. Still, you could also pre-order physical versions from the Japanese publisher. We used the past tense, and for a good reason: we looked at the Square Enix Store and, despite switching between the Switch and PlayStation 4 versions, the standard edition is out of stock. (We linked the EU store, but likely, the situation is the same in North America.) Square Enix wasn’t kidding when they said the quantity is limited. However, we were shocked at the price: 75 euros!? It’s six JRPGs (especially V-VI is where the length expanded significantly), but that’s a lot of money. According to a tweet, the US $75 price is accompanied by $25 handling and postage, so you might end up paying €100 for the pack… and mind you, this is the standard edition!

There’s also a collector’s edition called Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster Collection – Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary Edition, which will cost $260 overseas and €275 in Europe (PS4 , Switch). For that, in addition to the game disc/cassette, it will include an Anniversary Edition goods box, a bonus lenticular sleeve for the game package, a two-disc vinyl record set featuring newly arranged game music with exclusive cover artwork by Kazuko Shibuya, a specially compiled artbook showcasing beautiful character pixel art, and eight stylized pixel art character figures in window packaging.

Square Enix has yet to provide a release date, so we can say that Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster Collection will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in the spring. Fortunately, the sextet will also be available digitally…
