It’s time to question the status of Playground Games, another project announced two and a half years ago, in addition to Forza Horizon.
The fact that Playground Games now has two studios doesn’t seem to have much impact at the moment because although Forza Horizon 5 has been released (and the content of that is still being updated), there are only rumors regarding the Fable reboot. In the latest episode of VGC’s podcast, Andy Robinson claims that Fable is still a long way from being finished, having only recently entered full development. That sounds awful! Nothing more.
According to Robinson, the studio has a common notion about the gameplay being Witcher-like, i.e., that they’re trying to imitate the style of CD Projekt RED’s games with the Fable reboot. It’s not the only Xbox Game Studios project mentioned during the podcast. The next game after the launch of Starfield (Bethesda Game Studios) will be Hellblade II: Senua’s Sacrifice (Ninja Theory), followed by Avowed (Obsidian Entertainment). Perfect Dark (The Initiative, Crystal Dynamics) and Everwild (Rare) are also a long way off, says Robinson.
With most rumors that Fable’s development has been a mess, Microsoft should have waited to announce it, as it will be a bit like what CD Projekt RED did with Cyberpunk 2077. There, it took about eight years between announcement and release (and that game was postponed several times by the Polish team but was still incomplete and technologically shocking at launch). One should slowly learn to take a different approach: only announce something when it is already far enough advanced because that way, you can keep the release date. But it’s the hype that big companies need…
It is all unofficial, but the answer to the title question here is: horribly.
