Jenna Ortega, star of Scream VI – which you can read our review of at this link – gave us some ideas on what classic slasher film could be a perfect pairing for the new sequel. Among them, she mentioned Dario Argento’s Deep Red.

After three decades of horror fan collecting, the latest instalment in the Scream franchise arrives this week, which means the return of the newest Scream Queen favourite, Ortega.

In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, she recommended one of her slasher favourites, famed Italian director Dario Argento’s 1975 film Deep Red. “I really don’t know that this works as a double feature, but I’ve been talking about that film, Deep Red,” Ortega said, “which is a ’70s, slasher, masked killer; you don’t know who it is. Epic deaths, disco music playing during the deaths. I think it’s just a good time and beautifully shot.” Argento, one of the best-known horror directors of the last century, is known for his gore and violence. Contemporary filmmakers often cite his style as the inspiration for the American slasher genre. His legacy includes films such as Suspiria (1977), Tenebrae (1982) and Phenomena (1985).

Ortega’s other outstanding horror credits include Prom Night (1980), starring fellow scream queen and finalist Jamie Lee Curtis.

In Scream V, Ortega’s character Tara scolds her killer prank caller in the opening scene about slashers and her love of elevated horror like The Babadook. However, Ortega might prefer a classic, old-fashioned slice of life.

Jenna Ortega’s character bore the brunt of the stabbings. Still, she managed to survive Scream V alongside her sister (played by Melissa Barrera). Ortega may be the next continuing heroine of the Scream franchise. That is if she manages to survive the new film.
