MOVIE NEWS – The search for Julian Sands may continue six months after the actor disappeared on Mount Baldy near Los Angeles.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Monday it is continuing search efforts for veteran actor Julian Sands. The well-known artist disappeared in January while hiking in the Mount Baldy area of the San Gabriel Mountains, less than 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Officials said more than 80 volunteer search-and-rescue volunteers, deputies and staffers took part in the search yesterday in the nearby wilderness and remote areas of the mountain range. Two helicopters and drones also participated in the effort. The 65-year-old Sands was not found.
The search was temporarily suspended after the experienced British actor, a seasoned outdoorsman, was reported missing on January 13 due to extremely harsh winter conditions in the western United States.
Since Sands’ disappearance, San Bernardino sheriffs said they had conducted eight searches to find him, among eight other related operations.
“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” the department said today. “Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10-plus feet of ice and snow.”
The Sheriff’s Department said Sands’ case remains active. Search efforts are continuing on a limited basis.
Sands is known for his roles in films such as Killing Fields, A Room with a View, The Wizard, Arachnophobia, Boxing Helena and Leaving Las Vegas. On television, she appeared in 24, Smallville and Banshee.
