MOVIE NEWS – Ahsoka Tano will be hunting Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming Star Wars series. But there’s a problem with this plot point…
Ahsoka Tano sets out on a journey to find and stop the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming series Ahsoka. However, there is one big problem with the plot. When the former Jedi sets off on his adventure, she will be accompanied by Mandalorian Sabine Wren, Thrawn’s old enemy and, surprisingly, Tano’s former apprentice. The series promises to take a close look at several relationships.
Ahsoka and Sabine’s relationship will be front and centre, as will Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati. All pursue Thrawn for different reasons, with different connections to the Grand Admiral.
For the recurring cast of Star Wars Rebels, the mission to stop Thrawn is a particularly personal one. In addition to relentlessly pursuing and ultimately destroying their first rebel base, Thrawn was also ready to wipe out Lothal at the Emperor’s command. The Jedi Ezra Bridger thwarted Palpatine’s plans. He relieved Lothal of Thrawn’s fleet, then disappeared with the Grand Admiral into the Unknown Regions. So Sabine and Hera Syndulla have every reason to join the hunt. After all, finding Thrawn means they can reunite with their lost friend. But why is stopping Thrawn personal for Tano?
Ahsoka disappeared before Grand Admiral Thrawn even showed up
Ahsoka never actually witnessed Thrawn chasing Phoenix Squadron, as she was “lost” on Malachor before Thrawn entered the fray. The Rebels could almost be split into two stories. The first half of the series documents Ezra and Kanan Jarrus’ upbringing alongside the Rebels. Tano and Darth Vader join the story in the season one finale. The second season builds up to their violent confrontation on Malachor. The former Jedi’s fate remained ambiguous until Rebels season 4 when Ezra pulled her out of the duel to safety in the “World Between Worlds”.
However, she was unable to participate in the liberation of Lothal. She returned to Malachor through the portal from which she was pulled. Ahsoka promised Ezra that she would visit him once she found a way off the Sith planet. But when that would happen remains to be seen. Ezra and Thrawn disappeared before Tano could return. This prevented her from participating in the final showdown with the Admiral. His desire to bring Ezra home is consistent with the promise she made. But Thrawn’s absence in the conflict between the Empire and the Rebellion raises questions about Ahsoka.
Ahsoka and Thrawn have never met – so why is she so worried?
Ahsoka Tano and Grand Admiral Thrawn never actually met. The series’ marketing focuses on the title character’s desire to stop Thrawn’s return. It refers to him directly as the “Heir to the Empire”. It seems that stopping Thrawn is more critical to Ahsoka than finding Ezra. The latter is likely to be Sabine’s motivation. In the era of the New Republic, Tano wanders and, based on whispers spreading through the galaxy, tracks Thrawn.
It is assumed that she is aware of Thrawn’s military prowess based on her friends’ narratives, but the fear of his return is odd given their lack of personal history.
A possible explanation might be Ahsoka’s attachment to her old master. Anakin Skywalker and Thrawn have a surprising connection, having met during the Clone Wars, presumably after Tano left the Jedi Order. Where Ahsoka stands with Anakin at the start of the series remains to be seen. But a visit from Skywalker’s Force Ghost may contain a warning about Thrawn’s abilities. It’s something that many have been expecting: that Anakin will notify Luke about Palpatine’s survival on Exegol. That he might be the one to warn his apprentice is the perfect way to set the events of Ahsoka in motion.
