AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE: An RTX 4070 Rival From “The Reds”

TECH NEWS – With more VRAM for the same price from AMD, this RTX card is definitely in the crosshairs of the “red company”.

So far, there has been limited availability of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card in China and later in Europe, but AMD has officially announced a worldwide launch of the GPU, which features a slimmed down Navi 31 GPU with 80 RDNA 3 CUs (compute units) and 5120 cores, 256-bit memory bus, 18 Gbps memory speed and 64 MB cache. Compared to the RX 7900 XT, it is slightly weaker (84 CU, 5376 cores, 320-bit memory bandwidth, 20 Gbps speed, and 80 MB cache). The base clock speed is 1270 MHz, which is much lower (730 MHz difference) compared to the RX 7900 XT, and the boost remains 2245 MHz.

In the USA, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is available from today for $549, the same price as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. At least on paper, since Nvidia’s card is already on sale overseas for $500. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is also manufactured by Acer, ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire and XFX. The cards from Acer and Asus will be available in March.

According to AMD’s official slides, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE offers 14% better value for money than the RTX 4070, and in tests AMD’s graphics card performs 3-8% better until you turn on ray tracing, at which point the RTX 4070 leaves AMD’s new product standing. The RTX 4070 Super is $50 more expensive, but offers much better performance. However, the RX 7900 GRE has 16GB of VRAM while both RTX 4070 models have 12GB. More VRAM leads to better AI performance, for example when using LLMs (large language models).

But the power consumption of the card is frighteningly high (260W)!
