Original The Crow Director Gives His Take On The Upcoming Remake!

MOVIE NEWS – Alex Proyas believes The Crow should live on as a testament to Brandon Lee’s legacy.

Lionsgate’s upcoming remake of the 1994 classic The Crow has proven controversial. Many expressed their excitement, while others said the original film should be left alone. Alex Proyas, the director of the 1994 film, belongs to the latter category. He recently expressed his disappointment that the remake is moving forward.

“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film,” Proyas wrote on his Facebook page. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes.”

“THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”

One of the most infamous tragedies in Hollywood history happened on the set of the original film. Lee, the film’s star and son of martial artist Bruce Lee, died after being shot in the stomach with a prop gun. Lee completed most of the scenes before his death, so the film is dedicated to his memory. The film, which was based on the comic book series of the same name, followed a murdered musician (Lee). He is brought back to life by a magical raven, allowing him to avenge the murder of both himself and his fiancée. The 1994 film was a huge success, and since its release, many, including Proyas, have argued against rebooting the project.

Some say The Crow is cursed

Although The Crow spawned several sequels, it was Lionsgate that was finally able to reboot the original film. (After several other attempts had failed.) This led many to label the movie cursed.

Because the reboot went through many iterations and star casts until 2008 before Lionsgate was finally able to nail it down.

In the 2024 version of the film, Bill Skarsgård will play the title role. It’s not a surprising choice, considering he plays scary characters like Pennywise in Stephen King’s IT series. Alongside him, FKA Twigs will play his fiancee, Shelly, and Isabella Wei, Danny Huston, Jordan Bolger, Sami Bouajila, and Laura Birn will also appear. The director of the remake, Rupert Sanders, acknowledged the controversy surrounding the film.

The premiere of the film is scheduled for June 7 in the USA.
