Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio have been hit hard, as Sony Interactive Entertainment has canceled both of their projects…
Sony and the live service model just don’t seem to go together, unless we’re talking about Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2. Firewalk Studios’ Concord failed after two weeks (!) of time and money, and just two months later Sony shut down the Firewalk team. This was a bad omen for the other Live Service projects… and remember, the company used to say it was going to make a dozen of these games, and then in the fall of 2023 said that six of them were delayed.
Bloomberg has reported that the Live Service games from Bluepoint Games (developer of the Demon’s Souls Remake) and Bend Studio (developer of Days Gone) are now dead. This means that three of the previously announced 12 games have been canceled. According to Bloomberg editor Jason Schreier, Bluepoint Games’ game was supposed to be a live service title for God of War and had been in the works since 2022, after God of War: Ragnarok was released for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, so two years of work have been thrown in the trash. No word on what Bluepoint is working on now. Bend may have thrown away years of work…
A spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed the cancellations after an evaluation came to this conclusion. PlayStation will continue to develop single player and online titles. For now, the company plans to work closely with the two studios to determine what Bluepoint and Bend’s next game should be. There’s no word yet on whether the cancellation of the projects will lead to layoffs (it certainly will…), but according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, the plan is to have minimal impact on the business.
In other words, there’s bound to be some downsizing…
