Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2: The Licensee Gives Its Stamp of Approval!

Games Workshop is so pleased with the success of the new Warhammer game that they’re already looking for a way to make their next “hit” a hit.

We’ve already heard that Saber Interactive’s third-person shooter sold 2 million copies in a single day. The momentum for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 didn’t stop there, as it hit 5 million by the end of November. It became one of the bestselling games of 2024, and Games Workshop benefited. They have the Warhammer license, and on Tuesday they released their half-year financial report. In it, they essentially said that they are already looking for the next Warhammer game that will be equally successful:

“During the period, our license partners launched two new video games; Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, a third-person shooter for PC and console, and Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks, a combat racing game. Established games continue to contribute, as does the royalty income generated by the success of Space Marine 2. We recognize that such successes for Warhammer are not a given in the world of video games. We are obviously looking for the next one. We remain cautious about forecasting royalty income. […]

Royalty income increased by £18.0 million to £30.1 million (at constant exchange rates an increase of £19.3 million to £31.4 million) in the period. Royalty income is recognized in accordance with IFRS 15 ‘Revenue from Contracts with Customers’; ‘guarantee income’ is recognized in full at the inception of the contract when the performance obligations under the contract have been met and additional ‘earned income’ is recognized when it can be reliably measured following reporting by licensees. Earned income was £26.1 million (2023/24: £5.9 million), with the increase mainly due to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2,” Games Workshop wrote.

Games Workshop is right about the fickleness of such success. There have been many Warhammer and Warhammer 40K games in the last decade, but none of them have achieved the commercial success that Games Workshop has. So they have their work cut out for them!
