Wartorn: The Connection Between Myth: The Fallen Lords and BioShock’s Lead Designer’s New Game [VIDEO]

The inspiration for Wartorn is a forgotten Bungie game where you controlled dwarves to blow up zombies.

Everyone’s first experience with physics in a video game is different. An early example is Bungie’s Myth 2: Soulblighter. It’s a fantasy tactical game where massive chaos ensues as dwarves throw bombs and their army leaves zombie body parts all over the maps over time. While the franchise was easily surpassed by Halo, it was the inspiration for Dallas, Texas-based Stray Kite Studios. We’ve already written more about Wartorn’s announcement.

The announcement video doesn’t really delve into the story of Wartorn, but rather the video (which we’ve embedded below anyway) focuses on what the combat will be like. You can see the inspiration for Mythos about thirty seconds into the video when we see the Arrow Shower ability, but another half minute later we see an ogre smashing his club into the ground to create a shockwave that knocks several enemies off their feet.

There’s also a difference from Bungie’s work in that natural abilities are part of Wartorn, so you’ll be able to use fireballs, for example. There’s also a tidal wave spell that’s cast over a group of fiery demons halfway through the trailer. These elements will apparently interact with each other in the usual way (water extinguishes fire, lightning electrifies water, etc.) while also wreaking havoc in highly destructible environments, according to Stray Kite.

Paul Hellquist, who was lead designer on SWAT 4 and BioShock, went on to be game design director on Borderlands and is now working on Stray Kite. Shovaen Patel, co-founder of the studio, previously worked on the Orcs Must Die series, and the influence is palpable. Hellquist said in an interview with CohhCarnage on YouTube that Mythos was a big influence: “We had different ideas about the kind of games we wanted to make. And I brought up, ‘Hey, have any of you guys ever played this game called Myth? And Shovaen was like, oh yeah, I used to love Myth. That got the ball rolling and we were like, ‘Man, it would be really cool to kind of revive some of the things that were in that product, but modernize it,'” Hellquist said.

Wartorn is slated for an early access release on Steam later this year.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
