Havoc Promises to Be the Ultimate Action Thriller with Tom Hardy

MOVIE NEWS – The mastermind behind The Raid and The Raid 2, Gareth Evans, has given fans exactly what they wanted to hear about his highly anticipated project with Tom Hardy. Havoc, set to arrive on Netflix later this year after years of development, has been described by the director as a “love letter to the heroic bloodshed genre”. Does anything more need to be said?

During the recent Next on Netflix showcase (as reported by What’s on Netflix), Evans shed some light on the long-awaited action thriller. The story follows a corrupt American detective determined to rescue a mayoral candidate’s son from the depths of Chinatown’s criminal underworld. He also revealed that, much like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and even Carry-On, Havoc is set during the Christmas season.

The film takes place over two nights during the holidays, though Evans jokingly remarked, “It’s not really a Christmas movie in the traditional sense, as you’d expect from me!”. Of course, while Havoc isn’t a reimagining of The Grinch, everything about this high-octane thriller suggests it could easily join the ranks of classic holiday action films alongside Bruce Willis’s legendary Die Hard.

Havoc’s Antihero Is the Perfect Role for Tom Hardy

Beyond the “love letter to the heroic bloodshed genre” statement—an exciting promise in itself—Evans also revealed new details about Hardy’s character, Walker. The role sounds like a perfect fit for the Mad Max: Fury Road star and Academy Award nominee. Evans describes Walker as an antihero “haunted by a tragic past and forced to rely on brute force”, adding that Hardy “brought an incredible level of forensic detail to the character”.

Hardy and Evans have also been praised by Havoc star Jessie Mei Li, who plays Ellie, Walker’s rookie partner. “You need to feel that the two characters share a real kinship and mutual understanding,” she said. “We were very lucky to have the director we had, and working with Tom was fantastic. He’s such an unpredictable actor, which kept things exciting on set.”

While Havoc has yet to receive an official release date, Netflix has confirmed it will debut in spring 2025 as part of an exciting slate that includes The Old Guard 2 and Knives Out 3, officially titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Addressing previous rumors about the film’s runtime, Evans—who serves as both writer and director—has now confirmed that Havoc will run for a “tight as a drum 1 hour 45 minutes”.

Tom Hardy leads the film alongside Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker and Justified star Timothy Olyphant. The supporting cast includes Justin Cornwell, Jessie Mei Li, Yeo Yann Yann, Quelin Sepulveda, Luis Guzmán, Sunny Pang, and Michelle Waterson.
