Dan Houser Introduces the Absurdaverse – A Bold New Universe from Absurd Ventures

Absurd Ventures, founded by Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, has unveiled the Absurdaverse, a new multimedia universe. The studio is developing a story-driven action-comedy game alongside animation projects featuring a diverse lineup of characters. Additional Houser-led projects include the American Caper comic book series and an ongoing podcast-based audio fiction series.

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has provided a glimpse into what fans can expect from his latest venture, Absurd Ventures. While the new studio has yet to build the legacy Rockstar Games has established over the past 26 years, the celebrated game developer and producer recently unveiled the Absurdaverse, a universe that spans multiple forms of media beyond video games.

Houser co-founded Rockstar Games in 1998 with his brother Sam Houser, now the company’s president, and others. As lead writer, he was instrumental in shaping some of Rockstar’s most iconic franchises, including Grand Theft Auto, Bully, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne 3. However, Houser left Rockstar nearly five years ago following an extended break that began in 2019, reportedly due to an exhausting work schedule that at times saw him logging 100-hour weeks.

The First Glimpse at the Absurdaverse Characters

Now, as Absurd Ventures moves forward with its plans for the Absurdaverse, fans have been given an early preview of the universe’s inhabitants. A newly released image on Absurd Ventures’ official website showcases 20 unique characters who don’t necessarily seem like they belong in the same game. Among them is a horned-helmet-wearing barbarian, a Victorian-era gentleman with steampunk goggles atop his hat, a pale-skinned figure adorned with a necklace of skulls and hidden beneath a green hood, and several more contemporary-looking figures. While Absurd Ventures has yet to provide detailed information on these characters, they are all somehow connected within the Absurdaverse, and the company promises to reveal more later this year through animation projects.

Further details from Absurd Ventures indicate that the studio is actively developing a story-driven action-comedy game, around which the upcoming animation projects will be centered. However, it’s unclear whether all 20 showcased characters will be tied to this game. Absurd Ventures is also working on the American Caper comic book series, set to launch later this year, as well as the ongoing podcast-based fiction series A Better Paradise.

The Absurdaverse will likely expand even further in 2025, but it’s not the only project Houser is involved in. In 2022, he made a significant investment in blockchain-focused game studio Revolving Games and currently serves as a member of its advisory board.
