A new surprise for PlayStation fans. One of Xbox’s most iconic strategy franchises is expanding to PS5, bringing Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. The first will launch on PlayStation on March 4, while the latter is set to arrive later in the spring.
Xbox continues its strategy of bringing its popular IPs to multiple platforms. This time, Age of Empires, one of its most iconic real-time strategy series, is making its way to PS5. Two titles from the franchise, Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, will soon be available for PlayStation players. The first of these, Age of Mythology: Retold, will debut on March 4, while Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will follow sometime in the spring.
The announcement was made in an official statement on the Age of Empires website, outlining the upcoming plans for the franchise in 2025. The developers confirmed that the PS5 versions of both games will feature the same content as their Xbox and PC counterparts.
On one hand, Age of Mythology: Retold will launch on PlayStation alongside the Immortal Pillars expansion, which will be available for purchase on PS5. Sony players will also have the option to buy a Premium Edition, granting them early access to the game five days before launch (on February 27). Additionally, pre-orders will include two exclusive Blessings for the Arena of the Gods mode.
Meanwhile, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition does not yet have a confirmed release date for its PS5 version. However, the franchise’s developers have hinted at an exciting upcoming expansion:
“Alongside this release, we will be introducing one of the most exciting DLC expansions for Age II: DE, packed with fresh content, new civilizations for Ranked matches, and full cross-platform play on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.”
Xbox Aims to Expand Its Player Base with Cross-Platform Play
The Age of Empires website emphasized the importance of cross-platform functionality, stating:
“Playing across platforms is a game-changer for our franchise, and it’s all about bringing our community together. This isn’t just about convenience – it’s about growing and strengthening the Age community. With crossplay, we’re creating a global battlefield where every strategy, every empire, and every player matters.”
This move is part of a broader effort by Xbox to make its games available beyond its own ecosystem. Over the past few months, Microsoft has confirmed that multiple first-party titles are heading to PlayStation, including Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded.
Now, the trend is expanding to bigger IPs. Recently, it was confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5 will be arriving on PS5 later this spring. With Age of Empires now joining the lineup, it seems likely that more Xbox exclusives will follow suit in the coming months.
