NINTENDO NEWS – The big N is rumored to have more than just one game planned for Samus Aran in the near future…
The last time we saw Samus in a new Metroid was in 2021 (as the remaster of the first Metroid Prime, due out in 2023, is not considered a new title) when Metroid Dread was released, a return to the roots of Metroid, which was a 2D sidescrolling game from the start. The Switch-exclusive game was quite well-received, as it was able to deliver classic gameplay alongside modern graphics. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is scheduled for release in 2025 (but there’s no exact release date yet), and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to make it one of the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch titles.
However, there could be more in the pipeline, according to Nash Weedle, a Spanish insider. His credibility is to be believed, as he was able to accurately predict the release of Metroid Dread in 2021.According to him, a new 2D Metroid from MercurySteam is also in the works, and it could be a first-party in-house development for the Nintendo Switch 2. Since this is the team behind Metroid Dread, they would also have experience with the franchise…
Reminder: New 2d Metroid might be coming in 2025 according to Spanish leaker Nash Weedle, who successfully leaked Metroid Dread in 2021.

A 2025 release window for 2D Metroid would be logical, since Metroid: Samus Returns came out in 2017, so every four years would be something retro. One could argue that it would cannibalize each other a bit if both games actually came out this year, but given the gameplay differences between the untitled 2D Metroid and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, it wouldn’t be “annoying” for gamers if both games actually came out this year. However, Nintendo may reconsider and push the 2D game to 2026 to be more cautious, so that interest in Samus’ other adventure doesn’t diminish too much.
None of this is official yet, and since we don’t know exactly when Nintendo Switch 2 will be released (and how much we’ll have to pay), there are still a lot of questions surrounding Samus.
