Two Onimusha news in one, as Capcom has announced that in addition to the new game, a modernization of the second part is in the works.
Let’s start with the new game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. In the first video, embedded below, producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei explain how they will bring the franchise back in a way that will not only appeal to veteran fans, but also to modern audiences, and of course the quality of the swordplay will not be neglected…
“In this game, we are taking Onimusha’s signature swordplay action and dark fantasy elements and using Capcom’s latest technology to make this new game as engaging as possible. We’re focusing on three core aspects: compelling characters, including a new protagonist and enemies that are more than just visually interesting; the setting of Kyoto, a place full of historical sites with mysterious and disturbing backstories; and the ultimate in sword-fighting action. The footage we showed earlier was from a short version of the trailer. For some regions, gameplay footage was recorded with dismemberment disabled. But please note that dismemberment and blood will be fully featured in the game,” Kadowaki said.
Nihei began by talking mainly about how Kyoto will be depicted: “We decided to set the game in the Edo period of historical Japan. You’ll explore historical locations around Kyoto, such as the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, in a heroic tale of a soul samurai battling hordes of twisted creatures known as Genma. Through a twist of fate, the protagonist finds himself wielding an Oni gauntlet. Now in Onimusha, he sets out to mow down the monstrosities that roam the world of the living and feed their souls to the gauntlet. Through gritty, blood-soaked battles, he searches for his reason to fight. Putting our own spin on real historical figures, you will meet a cast of unique characters. And in addition to the swordplay, the drama will unfold in a beautifully eerie depiction of Kyoto.”
The director then went on to talk about the combat: “With sword-to-sword combat, we put a lot of emphasis on the satisfaction of slicing through enemies. As you’ve seen in the footage that’s been released, there’s also a lot of soul-sucking action with the Oni gauntlet. By absorbing souls, you can restore your health and perform special moves.Deciding how to absorb your enemy’s souls in the heat of an intense battle will be the key to victory. We’re not trying to make an impossibly difficult game.Instead, we want to make a game where action fans can experience thrilling swordplay and feel the satisfaction of defeating their enemies. We sincerely hope you look forward to what we are creating,” Nihei added.
The second video below is a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. It will be released sometime this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. And Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC sometime in 2026.
