Baldur’s Gate 3 Devs: “Generative AI Will Not Replace Developers!” [VIDEO]

According to Swen Vincke, developers will simply work differently with the content-creating AI…

We quoted from Vincke’s GameSpot interview the other day, but that was about modding. Other topics came up during the interview. Generative AI was also mentioned, and he is not against its use. He thinks it will speed up the work of developers, but it won’t speed up game development as a whole. He does not recommend replacing content creation with AI, i.e. replacing humans with AI.

“I think the naive thing is to think that it will shorten development times. I think it’s an age-old truth that if you give a developer two years, he’s going to take three. The same thing is going to be the case here with what you’re going to give them in terms of the ability to do things. If they have the ability to do things faster, they’re just going to do more, which is actually what you want. I don’t think you have a competitive advantage if you replace developers with generative AI, because that’s what’s going to be available to everybody.

If the baseline goes up because generation is available to everyone, fine, that’s a new reality we’re in. But you’re still going to want to build something special on top of that. I think that’s where teams like us are going to make a difference, we’re a very boutique team. We actually create the situations and the flow of the story by hand, it’s a thing that we do. When we talk to people about it, that is always the discussion. ‘Oh my God, our jobs are going to disappear,’ and, no, but you’re just going to work differently, potentially. But you’re still going to make a difference,” Vincke said.

However, Larian is not on the same level as Electronic Arts, for example, or many major publishers (Take-Two being perhaps the exception), so the Belgians may not go down that road, but other publishers might.
