With no exact release date yet, Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds 2 is back with another IGN Sneak Peek.
Rob Donovan, Obsidian’s Lead Combat Designer, and Kyle Koenig, Lead Systems Designer, spoke with IGN about the combat systems and changes to combat and gameplay in The Outer Worlds 2. They also talked a bit about some of the new changes to player movement. In The Outer Worlds 2, you’ll have the ability to parkour, which means you’ll be able to climb new areas, slide into cover, and even tune your character to shoot better while sliding.
The team’s design philosophy is best discussed in the video embedded below. While we’ll have a lot more options for how we want to handle combat situations, the enemies are also designed to surprise us and make them more challenging. One of the most important aspects of this is the elimination of level scaling in The Outer Worlds 2. According to Donovan, enemies are now “tiered”. While you will encounter some enemies in the early areas of the game that are a bit more difficult for beginners, once you’ve explored enough and leveled up, you can return to the early areas and destroy anything that dares get in your way.
A lot of attention has also been paid to making sure that all routes are viable in combat, so there is no one play style that players have to use, even if it is against the way they want to play. However, Donovan also stated later in the video that the team is keeping The Outer Worlds 2 as a ranged game, but with a focus on melee combat, so players who focus on melee combat may be disappointed. The team has been looking at games like Destiny 2 and Call of Duty to try and improve the weapon elements of The Outer Worlds 2 so that even if you don’t make a character that’s the most skilled gunslinger, you can still have fun with every weapon in your repertoire.
The Outer Worlds 2 will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC sometime this year, and an exact release date will likely be announced in a stream on June 8th after the Xbox E3 post-show broadcast.
